There’s an App for That: Help Protect Florida by Reporting Invasive Species

Florida’s natural beauty is one of our greatest treasures—but it’s under threat. Invasive plants and animals are spreading across our state, displacing native species and disrupting delicate ecosystems. The good news? You can help stop the spread right from your smartphone or computer.

Whether you’re hiking a trail, walking your neighborhood, or just enjoying time in your yard, you can report invasive species the moment you see them. All you need is an internet connection and a few minutes of your time.

Why Reporting Matters

Many invasive species didn’t arrive here on their own. Some were introduced intentionally for landscaping, agriculture, or even the pet trade. Others hitchhiked on imported goods—think lizards catching rides on ships from the south or seeds hidden in the mulch of nursery plants.

What seemed like a harmless addition to a garden decades ago has often turned into a nightmare for today’s native plants and wildlife. Some of the fastest-growing, most beautiful landscaping plants are now overwhelming our ecosystems. Reporting these species helps experts track their spread and develop strategies to protect our environment.

The website www.IveGot1.org makes it easy for anyone to take action. This partnership of state and federal agencies offers two convenient ways to report:

  • Mobile App – Download the IveGot1 app to your phone and report sightings on the spot.

  • Website – Prefer to wait until you’re home? Snap a photo and submit your report later on your computer.

Both options are quick and user-friendly. You’ll create a free account with your name and contact information, then provide:

  • The name of the species (or a detailed description if you’re unsure)

  • A clear photo for identification

  • The date of your sighting

  • The exact location (GPS coordinates or a street address)

  • A brief description of the surrounding habitat

Your Small Step Makes a Big Difference

Reporting invasive plants and animals may seem simple—but it has a powerful impact. Every submission helps scientists and land managers respond more effectively, protect native species, and preserve Florida’s unique landscapes for future generations.

So next time you spot something unusual in your yard, park, or favorite trail, don’t just wonder about it. Take a photo, open IveGot1, and make your report. Together, we can keep Florida’s ecosystems strong and thriving.
