Annie the Ant!

Have you ever watched a line of ants marching across the sidewalk and wondered where they were going? Meet Annie the Ant, a tiny insect with a very important job to do!

If Annie were entered in a weightlifting contest, she would be a champion! Ants can carry objects many times heavier than their own bodies. Imagine carrying a school bus on your back—that would be similar to what Annie can do compared to her size.

This incredible strength helps ants move food, leaves, seeds, and building materials back to their colony.

Builders and Engineers

Annie's colony may live underground, inside a rotting log, beneath a rock, or even in a tree. Ant colonies contain tunnels, chambers, nurseries, food storage areas, and special rooms for the queen.

Scientists often study ants because their colonies are examples of efficient design and teamwork.

Nature's Helpers

Ants play important roles in nature. They help aerate the soil as they dig tunnels, allowing air and water to reach plant roots. Some ants help spread seeds, while others help clean up dead insects and plant material.

Because ants are such important members of an ecosystem, they help keep nature healthy and balanced.

Annie and her friends are excellent problem solvers. When they encounter an obstacle, they work together to find another route. Some species of ants even form living bridges with their bodies so other ants can cross gaps safely.
